Comfort Bird Project
The Comfort Bird is an idea coming from a gentleman by the name of Frank Foust from Montoursville PA. Frank started making comfort birds in 1982. Frank’s mission was to make the birds for those who needed comforting. They were designed to fit in one’s hand and be held in times of need. He furthered the mission by donating them to a local church, so they could sell them as a fund raiser for $10.00 each. Frank has made thousands of birds.
Around 5 years ago Cherry Ridge Carvers decided to do the same. Birds were completed by many of the members and then donated to a church or given to someone in need. Any money collected was to be donated to a local church. We have since had some members continue to carve the birds, with one member doing possibly hundreds along with comfort crosses.
At our April 2018 meeting we decided to continue and promote this project again, this time donating the birds to cancer treatment centers. We are asking members to carve comfort birds that will be delivered to centers in our region. Our hope is that by providing a comfort bird to someone in need we can help them through some of the tough times.
